Longtime No post! Djembe has been working a lot behind the scenes and we are ready to launch everything we have been planning.
It may be shocking but so many upcoming artists do not know that there’s a type of press coverage called editorial playlist covers and while some are aware, they have no idea how to get featured maybe because they are independent artists or have little or no PR guidance.
Today’s topic is how to actually get featured on editorial playlist covers. Let’s get right into it!
1. Have New Publicity Photos: If you are an artist or a manger to an artist and you still use photos from 3-4 months ago, this is article is for you. Publicity photos are commonly looked down on or rather not even enough attention. If you want to get a good shot at getting featured, you need to update your photo gallery with HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOS. You don’t have to spend way above your budget but ensure whatever your budget is, it’s enough to get good photos that will depict your artist’s style.
2. Include photos when pitching to the streaming platform: yayyy you have enough quality photos! Still, you need to submit them when pitching to any streaming platform. They need to know the face behind the project so don’t forget to add them in your pitch. Bonus point: if you have great photos but your pitch does not depict the efforts put into the project, then you won’t get featured. Learn how to sell yourself and most importantly your project. Do not exaggerate.
3. Update your Bio: Update my bio? To get on a cover? Yes. Whatever streaming platform you choose would want to go through your bio. Get a good writer to update your bio, this is a unique selling point. If you can intrigue the minds of the editorial team when you pitch to them with your bio, you stand a great chance.
4. Submit your asset in a Google drive: Off the record, asides being the founder of Djembe African Music Blog, I am an Artist Project Manager and PR personnel. You need to get your assets in a Google drive and don’t forget to make it accessible to everyone that HAS A LINK. This does not only make you a unique artist but a professional one who is ready to get featured on an editorial playlist cover. Add your asset link to your pitch. It makes everything easier for the editorial team.
5. While awaiting a response from the team, keep growing your audience: When you are done submitting your pitch, go back to your audience, create a strategy on how to make them follow you on various streaming platforms your songs are available on. If you don’t get featured this one time, keep trying by improving your approach and by growing your audience.
These are the tips we have for you this weekend so don’t fail to put these into practice and be sure to give us a feedback once you try the tips above. Any questions, drop a comment in the comments section. Note: You can’t pitch to get a cover but you can pitch to get featured on a playlist and actually land a cover.
